1.Acceptance of these terms
By creating an account or otherwise using uni.africa's website, mobile app or AI tutor (together, "the Service"), you agree to these Terms of Service and to our Privacy Policy. If you don't agree, please don't use the Service.
2.Eligibility
You must be 18 years or older to register for an account at this time. We verify this using the date of birth you provide at sign-up. Creating an account with a false date of birth, or on behalf of someone who doesn't meet this requirement, is a breach of these terms.
3.Your account
You're responsible for keeping your login credentials secure and for all activity under your account. Tell us immediately if you suspect unauthorised access. One account per person — accounts aren't transferable, and you shouldn't share your login with anyone else.
You can register with an email and password, or a phone number verified by a one-time SMS code. Keep your contact details accurate and up to date, particularly for payment receipts and certificate delivery.
4.The service we provide
uni.africa offers text-first, mobile-friendly courses designed to work fully offline once downloaded — typically in 20-minute lessons with quizzes — plus an AI tutor to help while you study, progress tracking and streaks, and a certificate when you finish a course. The first module of every course is free to preview before you enrol or pay.
We're an early-stage platform. Course catalogue, supported languages, and specific features may expand or change as we grow, and some features described in our marketing materials may be on our roadmap rather than available on day one — we'll always be upfront in-app about what's actually live.
5.Subscriptions, purchases and payment
5.1How you can pay
Depending on what's enabled in your market, you can: use a limited free tier (a capped number of AI tutor questions per day, plus each course's free first module); buy lifetime access to a single course; or subscribe to uni Pro (billed monthly or annually) for unlimited courses, unlimited tutor use (subject to fair-use limits) and included certificates. Current prices are always shown before you pay, in-app or at checkout — they are not fixed by this document, since they may vary by market, promotion, or pilot pricing.
5.2How payment works
Payments are processed by our payment partner (currently Flutterwave), supporting M-Pesa and card payment. We never see or store your card number or mobile money PIN — only a transaction reference and its status. A subscription renews automatically at the end of each billing period unless you cancel first; a one-off course purchase is a single charge for lifetime access to that course.
5.3Cancelling a subscription
You can cancel uni Pro at any time from account settings. Cancelling stops future renewals; you keep access through the end of the period you already paid for.
6.Refunds
6.1How to request one
Refunds aren't self-service — contact support (§16) and our team will review your request and process it manually. This lets a real person catch edge cases (double charges, a course that wasn't as described, a payment error) that an automated refund button tends to get wrong.
6.2Processing time
Once a refund is approved, we process it within 5 business days. It may take longer to appear in your account depending on your bank or mobile money provider.
§6.3 — Refund eligibility
A purchase is eligible for a refund if both of the following are true: (a) you're requesting within 14 days of the original purchase date, and (b) you have completed less than 20% of the course's content. Requests outside this window, or for courses substantially completed, are handled at our discretion — reach out anyway if something's gone wrong; we'd rather hear from you.
7.Acceptable use
Please don't:
- Share your account credentials or resell/redistribute access to courses, certificates or downloaded lesson packs;
- Attempt to extract the AI tutor's system prompt, use it to generate harmful, illegal or abusive content, or otherwise try to make it behave outside its purpose as a course study aid;
- Scrape, reverse-engineer, or use automated tools against the Service beyond normal app/API use;
- Upload or submit anything (quiz answers, tutor questions, support messages) that's unlawful, infringing, or abusive toward our staff or other learners;
- Interfere with the Service's security or attempt to access accounts or data that aren't yours.
We review flagged AI tutor sessions (§8) and may act on reports of misuse under §12.
8.The AI tutor — important limitations
The AI tutor can make mistakes. It's designed to answer questions grounded in your course material, but like any AI system it can occasionally be wrong, incomplete, or miss context. It is a study aid, not a certified instructor, and its answers aren't a substitute for professional advice on anything consequential (medical, legal, financial, or similar) — course subjects that touch on those areas are for general education only.
It needs an internet connection to respond; offline questions are queued and answered once you reconnect (never guessed at locally). You can flag any response with a thumbs-down, and low-rated or reported sessions may be reviewed by a human as part of our safety process.
9.Certificates
You earn a certificate when you complete 100% of a course's modules and pass its final assessment. Certificates include a public verification link so anyone (like a prospective employer) can confirm it's genuine. A certificate reflects that you completed our course content and assessment — it isn't an accredited academic qualification unless we say so explicitly for a specific course, and we don't guarantee any particular employment or income outcome from earning one.
10.Content and intellectual property
Course content, the uni.africa name and logo, and the app itself are owned by uni.africa or licensed to us by our instructors and content partners. When you enrol in or purchase a course, we grant you a personal, non-transferable licence to access it for your own learning — not to copy, redistribute, resell, or use it to train another AI system. Your own data (progress, quiz answers, tutor questions) remains yours in the sense described in our Privacy Policy; submitting it to us doesn't transfer ownership, but does let us use it to operate the Service as described there.
11.Your data and privacy
Our Privacy Policy explains what we collect and why, and is part of these terms by reference. It covers how to request a copy of your data or delete your account.
12.Suspension and termination
You can stop using the Service and delete your account at any time (Settings → Delete account, or contact us). We may suspend or terminate an account that breaches these terms — most commonly for the acceptable-use issues in §7 — and where practical we'll tell you why. Sections that by their nature should survive termination (like §10 and §13) continue to apply after your account is closed.
13.Disclaimers and limitation of liability
This section needs particular attention from qualified counsel before publication — liability limitations are highly jurisdiction-specific and consumer-protection law in our launch markets may restrict what can be disclaimed. The paragraph below is a reasonable placeholder, not final legal language.
The Service is provided "as is" and "as available." We work to keep it reliable and accurate, but we don't guarantee it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that any course or certificate will lead to a particular outcome. To the fullest extent permitted by law, uni.africa's liability for any claim arising from your use of the Service is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim arose. Nothing in these terms limits liability where the law doesn't allow it to be limited.
14.Governing law
Pending final entity/jurisdiction decision (see README.md) — Kenya is used below as the working assumption because it's our launch market and the jurisdiction our regulatory registrations (§14 of our Privacy Policy) are built around.
These terms are governed by the laws of Kenya, without regard to conflict-of-law principles, unless a different jurisdiction's mandatory consumer-protection law applies to you and can't be waived by agreement.
15.Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as the platform evolves or as required by law. If a change is material, we'll notify you in the app or by email before it takes effect. Continuing to use the Service after a change takes effect means you accept the updated terms.
